Travertine is a sedimentary limestone that forms quickly around mineral-heavy hot springs. Most deposits settle out pale — ivory, walnut, silver-grey. Iran’s Azarshahr basin is one of the few sources where a heavy concentration of iron oxide entered the sediment as it formed, staining the stone through and through rather than sitting on the surface.
That’s the structural reason a slab of red travertine stone keeps its colour under decades of foot traffic, sun and weather, instead of fading the way a surface stain eventually would. The same pitted, porous surface common to all travertine is still there — it’s the mineral content, not the texture, that sets this stone apart.
