What Is Natural Travertine Stone?
Travertine is a form of terrestrial limestone deposited by mineral springs, especially hot springs. This rapid geological precipitation process creates its signature porous structure, featuring natural voids and subtle, earthy veining.
Unlike denser metamorphic stones like quartzite, travertine offers a highly tactile, organic aesthetic. In its natural state, it features distinctive holes which can be left “unfilled” for a rustic, textured look, or “filled” with color-matched resin or cement for a smooth, refined surface.
Because it is a calcium carbonate-based stone, it is softer than granite and susceptible to acid etching. However, its unparalleled visual warmth and the striking difference between vein-cut (linear patterns) and cross-cut (cloudy patterns) make it an enduring favorite for high-end residential flooring, luxurious bathrooms, and striking exterior facades.

Travertine FAQ
Should I choose Filled or Unfilled Travertine?
It depends on the application. “Unfilled” travertine retains its natural holes, offering a rustic look and excellent slip resistance (perfect for outdoor spaces). “Filled” travertine has its voids filled with resin or cement at the factory, creating a smooth, easy-to-clean surface that is ideal for indoor flooring and wet areas.
What is the difference between Vein-Cut and Cross-Cut?
This refers to how the stone block is sliced. “Vein-Cut” slices against the natural bedding planes, revealing striking linear, parallel veins. “Cross-Cut” slices parallel to the bedding planes, resulting in a more uniform, cloudy, or flowery pattern without distinct lines.
Does Travertine require sealing?
Yes. Because travertine is a porous, calcium-based stone, a high-quality penetrating sealer must be applied upon installation and periodically maintained. This protects the stone from absorbing moisture and prevents staining from spills in daily use.
Can Travertine be used around swimming pools?
Absolutely. Unfilled or tumbled travertine is an industry favorite for pool decks. Unlike many dense stones, it naturally reflects heat and stays cool to the touch barefoot, while its textured surface provides exceptional slip resistance when wet.
Is Travertine suitable for kitchen countertops?
We generally do not recommend it for heavy-duty kitchen countertops. Because it is calcium-based (like marble), it is vulnerable to scratching and acid etching from acidic foods (like lemon or vinegar). For kitchens, we highly recommend our Quartzite or Granite collections instead.
