In many parts of the world, it is possible to build using locally sourced natural stone. The physical properties of natural stone vary widely depending on the type, meaning there is a suitable stone for nearly every construction requirement. Natural stone is non-flammable, requires no impregnation, coating, or other protective treatment, and each piece is unique and aesthetically pleasing. Because of the wide range of colors, textures, and surface finishes, architects often find it challenging to make design decisions. Therefore, understanding the basic classifications, formation processes, physical properties, and design applications of natural stone is essential.
Classification of Natural Stone
Natural stone can be divided into three main categories based on its geological formation and age:
1. Igneous Rocks (Magmatic Rocks)
For example, granite is a solidified rock formed from liquid magma and is among the oldest natural rock groups. Igneous rocks are typically very hard and dense. The oldest granite discovered to date—found in meteorites—formed approximately 4.53 billion years ago.
2. Sedimentary Rocks
Examples include limestone and sandstone. These rocks originated in more recent geological eras and formed from sediment deposits on land or in water. Sedimentary rocks are generally softer than igneous rocks; however, limestone deposits in China can date back as far as 600 million years ago.
3. Metamorphic Rocks
Examples include slate and marble. These are sedimentary rocks that have undergone transformation through heat and pressure, making them among the youngest geological formations. Slate, for instance, formed approximately 3.5 to 400 million years ago.
Focus on Marble
Marble is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of recrystallized carbonate minerals such as calcite or dolomite. In geology, the term “marble” refers to metamorphosed limestone; however, in masonry, it also includes unmodified limestone due to its similar appearance and use.
Marble is prized for its luxurious appearance and versatile properties, making it a preferred material for both sculpture and architectural decoration. Each piece of marble has a unique texture—smooth, delicate, and rich in color variation—offering a distinct visual experience. Its soft, elegant, and refined qualities make it an ideal material for luxury architecture and artistic craftsmanship.
The Growth of China’s Marble Industry
Since the year 2000, marble mining activity in Asia, particularly China, has grown significantly. Following China’s reform and opening-up policies, the natural marble industry has developed rapidly.
Chinese marble can be broadly categorized into seven color series based on the polished surface:
White, Yellow, Green, Gray, Red, Coffee, and Black.
China possesses abundant marble resources, with large reserves and numerous varieties, ranking among the top in the world. According to incomplete statistics, nearly 400 varieties of Chinese marble have been identified so far.
